The stepson of the Norwegian Crown Prince was convicted on Monday of rape and domestic violence, and was sentenced to four years in prison after a seven-week trial that further damaged the image of the once perfect royal family.

The Oslo District Court convicted Marius Borg Hoebe (29 years old), who joined the royal family when his mother, Mette-Marit, married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, on two counts of rape, one of them in the basement of the Crown Prince’s home. The court acquitted him of two other rape charges.

During the trial, the court heard evidence of Hoibi’s drug addiction, self-filmed videos of sexual encounters and hundreds of incriminating emails with a former partner.

Representatives of the Public Prosecution, who called for his imprisonment for seven years and seven months, said that the four women who accused him of rape, in both proven and unproven cases, were each time unconscious or unable to resist him after attending parties.

Hoibi denied the most serious charges against him, including rape and domestic violence, and admitted to some less serious charges, including transporting and delivering 3.5 kilograms of marijuana to an unknown person, violating a restraining order, and traffic violations.

A lawyer representing Huibi and the prosecution also said that it is possible to appeal the ruling.

The royal family, which had previously expressed its sympathy for all the victims of the case, declined to comment on Monday’s ruling. A spokesman for the Royal Palace said in a brief email, “The case has been considered before the courts, and we have no comment on the ruling.”

Huibi does not hold any royal title, does not perform any official duties, and is not in line for the throne. But his case captured the attention of all of Norway because of his connections to the Crown Prince.

Hoibi was also convicted of violence against his then-girlfriend between mid-2022 and the fall of 2013. During the trial, the court heard testimony that he repeatedly hit her in the face with his fist, choked her, and threw objects at her.

Hoibe followed the sentencing via video link from prison, but could not be seen or heard in the courtroom.

Only one of the women who accused him of rape attended the sentencing hearing.
