The American Senate fails again to pass a resolution to stop military operations against Iran

The US Senate tried again, on Tuesday, to pass a resolution related to war powers that would stop US military operations against Iran, but it failed to do so, in what has become an almost weekly effort to curb the powers of US President Donald Trump, while his administration presents a new plan to end the war that has been going on for about four months.

Senators from both parties expressed doubts about the agreement being negotiated between the Trump administration and Iran, and also expressed their dissatisfaction with the White House’s refusal to share its details.

Lawmakers are awaiting an official briefing from the administration, but no date has been set for that before Friday’s deadline for signing the agreement between the two sides.

The result of the vote was 47 to 48, with four Republican members joining most Democrats in supporting the war powers resolution, but that was not enough to achieve the majority required to pass it.

Senator Raphael Warnock, Democrat of Georgia, and the sponsor of the draft resolution, said in a speech before the vote: “Join me in putting an end to this president’s lawless belligerence.”

He added: “The time is always right to do what is right.”
