Gaza – Humanitarian efforts face obstacles and a reduction in funding

Partners report that shortages of fuel, motor oil and spare parts continue to hamper vital water and sanitation operations, including water production and distribution, as well as solid waste management. By allocating fuel according to priority, water production, treatment and trucking continued, but at a slower pace – said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

In his daily press conference, Dujarric said that the organization’s partners are continuing to implement the pest control plan in light of its widespread spread. UNDP is leading the pesticide spraying efforts, while UNICEF and UNRWA are supporting community mobilization and awareness of safety procedures.

Regarding food security, partners reported that nearly 420,000 people received food aid during the first two weeks of this month, covering approximately 75% of the minimum daily calorie needs.

In support of livelihoods, between 1 and 9 June, partners, supported by the United Nations, distributed animal feed to approximately 2,200 herders.

Since late March, partners have provided cash assistance worth $2,500 each to more than 1,000 farmers, in support of revitalizing local agricultural production across the Gaza Strip.

Dujarric stressed that the United Nations is doing its best, “but the needs are still enormous.” He reiterated the critical importance of continued humanitarian access, adequate fuel supplies, and increased funding to sustain and expand life-saving efforts.
