Korea’s monthly exports exceed $100 billion for the first time in June
SEOUL, 1st July, 2017 (WAM) – The Republic of Korea’s monthly exports recorded a new record, exceeding the barrier of 100 billion US dollars for the first time during the month of June, thanks to the record performance of the semiconductor sector, according to data issued today, Wednesday, by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
The data, reported by the Korean Yonhap News Agency, showed that exports jumped by 70.9% on an annual basis to reach 102.25 billion US dollars during June, and imports rose by 30.1% on an annual basis to reach 66.1 billion US dollars, leading to a trade surplus of 36.15 billion US dollars.
The data added that last June witnessed the monthly trade balance exceeding 30 billion US dollars for the first time.
She noted that semiconductor exports nearly tripled to reach US$44.82 billion, with monthly exports exceeding US$40 billion for the first time, driven by growing demand for memory chips.
During the period from January to June, exports reached a record level, rising by 48.4% compared to the previous year to reach $496.7 billion.
Semiconductor exports jumped by 163% compared to the previous year during the first half of the year.
