One million connections via the service "Starlink" On Emirates Airlines flights

Dubai, July 2 / WAM / Emirates Airlines customers have registered more than one million connections to the “Starlink” wireless Internet service since it was introduced across the carrier’s fleet seven months ago, in a new achievement that reflects the development of the connectivity experience on board aircraft.

The carrier explained, in a statement today, that the volume of data used by customers has so far exceeded one petabyte, while the service has received wide praise from travelers, with many describing it as better than home Internet.

With more than 60 flights daily operating on Emirates’ Starlink-equipped aircraft, customers choose to connect to this ultra-fast service to watch content, make video calls, browse social media, play online games, and stay in touch with family and friends throughout the flight.

Crossing the one million connections barrier reflects the rapid adoption by customers of the next-generation communication service provided by Emirates Airlines, which is currently available on board 33 Boeing 777 aircraft and three Airbus A380 aircraft, with installation work continuing at an accelerated pace across the carrier’s fleet, and more aircraft equipped with the service joining operations weekly.

Emirates Airlines was at the forefront of air carriers investing in on-board communication technologies, and was one of the first commercial carriers to provide Internet service on board Airbus A380 aircraft, when the first systems provided less than one megabit per second of the total communication capacity on the aircraft.

The current wireless Internet service on board Emirates allows customers to stay connected throughout the flight, through messaging, email, web browsing and social media services on most flights. The service is also available free of charge to all Emirates customers.

Today, Emirates Airlines is setting a new standard through aircraft equipped with the “Starlink” service, which is capable of providing more than two gigabits per second of total communication capacity, allowing customers in all classes to enjoy a free Internet experience, including direct calls and live broadcasts at an altitude of 40,000 feet.

After successfully introducing the “Starlink” service on Boeing 777 aircraft within the Emirates fleet, the carrier also began providing the service on board Airbus A380 aircraft. As the largest passenger aircraft in the world, the A380 required a special engineering solution, as each aircraft includes a first-of-its-kind installation in the sector of three “Starlink” antennas, designed specifically to meet the requirements of the double-decker aircraft and its large passenger capacity.

With the addition of additional wireless access points throughout the cabin, the system provides better coverage, capacity and performance in all classes of travel.

Improvements planned for the future include making live TV streaming available via Starlink, initially through customers’ personal devices, before later being integrated into Emirates’ award-winning ice, information, communications and inflight entertainment system.

To support the rapid rollout of the service across the fleet, Emirates has already begun implementing Starlink installation work at the Emirates Engineering Center facilities in Dubai, accelerating the introduction of next-generation connectivity technologies on more aircraft.

With the service having been installed so far on 33 Boeing 777 aircraft and three Airbus A380 aircraft, Emirates continues its commitment to providing free, high-speed wireless Internet to the largest possible number of customers, at the fastest possible pace.

The introduction of Starlink service on board Airbus A380 aircraft represents part of Emirates’ ongoing investments, and in parallel with one of the most ambitious fleet modernization programs in the aviation industry.

To date, 128 aircraft have undergone a comprehensive cabin modernization process, including the introduction of premium economy class, modernization of first and business class products, development of economy class cabins, and enhancement of inflight entertainment systems that provide more than 6,500 channels of content.
