“Measures body temperature.” Barcelona distributes bracelets to workers in outdoor spaces

The city of Barcelona has begun distributing bracelets to workers in open areas, which act as an early warning system for health risks and monitor worker temperature. This comes at a time when Spain is already witnessing successive heat waves, which have caused more than 1,000 deaths in excess of the number of deaths expected under normal circumstances in the month of June, according to Reuters.

The city distributed about 1,400 bracelets to employees working in open spaces, including street cleaners, lighting teams, gardeners, and waste management employees.

“This step comes as part of efforts to adapt to (increasingly severe) climate change,” said Pip Limona, prevention coordinator at the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The bracelet is distinguished by the fact that it measures the worker’s body temperature and emits a sound and vibration if it senses that the person wearing it is in danger. In this case, the worker must stop working.

It is noteworthy that a number of street workers have died in the past few years throughout Spain, due to high temperatures, which led to changes in work patterns and conditions.

Like many European countries, Spain has witnessed a severe heat wave over the past few weeks, as the Spanish Meteorological Service recorded the second hottest month in June since the beginning of records, and the country is also preparing for a second heat wave starting early next week.
