On Saturday, US President Donald Trump celebrated the United States on the 250th anniversary of its independence, considering it “the greatest achievement in human history.” He also used the occasion to renew his attack on his domestic opponents, whom he described as communists.
In a speech delayed for several hours due to storms that forced the temporary evacuation of crowds in Washington, Trump said that the United States was “more proud than ever” under his rule.
Trump, 80, largely stuck to a traditional patriotic speech after promising to organize a huge political rally to add his mark to the national celebrations.
“For two and a half centuries, our American Republic has remained a crowning achievement in human history,” he told a crowd of tens of thousands of people on the National Mall.
On the podium, he also paid tribute to veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
But he praised the two recent wars as examples of the fight against “communists,” repeating his message from a speech he gave Friday evening at the famous Mount Rushmore.
He said, “Our soldiers did not fight communism on battlefields around the world, for this danger to rear its ugly head here in America. We will not allow that to happen.”

Donald Trump repeatedly repeated this idea before the midterm congressional elections in November, at a time when those with leftist tendencies within the Democratic Party achieved a wave of victories in the primaries. “It’s like a cancer that needs to be removed,” he added.
The US President also used his speech to brag about recent military operations against Iran and Venezuela, saying that Washington had “eliminated” Iranian forces.
But the speech was relatively short by Trump’s standards, no more than 45 minutes.
A huge fireworks display went off after the speech. Trump had said that it would be the largest show of its kind in the world.
Americans braved a severe heat wave in cities in the east of the country to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Britain in 1776.
The temperature in the capital reached 39.4 degrees, the highest level recorded for the Fourth of July, with severe weather warnings issued for 160 million Americans, according to the National Weather Service.
Bad weather led to the postponement of the fireworks show in New York, and the evacuation of attendees from a concert in Philadelphia, and a celebration on the Charles River in Boston.
“A wonderful country”
Weather conditions threatened to spoil Trump’s speech, as tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate the National Mall hours before his speech due to approaching thunderstorms.
However, Trump insisted on going ahead with his speech, telling Fox News that if World War II D-Day veterans could brave bad weather, so could he.
