The European Parliament approves the updated trade agreement between the European Union and Mexico
Brussels, 9 July / WAM / The European Parliament approved the updated trade agreement between the European Union and Mexico, by a majority of 479 votes to 119 and 65 abstentions, paving the way for its formal adoption by the Council of the European Union.
The European representatives stressed that the agreement would provide greater opportunities for the food and agricultural industries sector, by reducing customs duties on a greater number of products, noting that the integration between the agricultural sectors on both sides made the agreement less controversial compared to the “Mercosur” agreement.
Parliament expressed its regret at the absence of an energy chapter in the agreement, calling for strengthening environmental commitments and making the Paris Climate Agreement an essential part of the treaty during its next review.
It is expected that the ambassadors of the EU countries will approve the agreement on Friday, and the EU ministers will give it final approval during the meeting of the European Affairs Ministers of the 27 countries on July 14.
