Agreement between the European Union, Britain and Spain regarding Gibraltar

Sign , Britain and Spain today in Brussels agreed on the future status of Gibraltar, stipulating the abolition of routine inspections on the land borders between .
The agreement was signed by Trade and Economic Security Maroš Sefcovic, British Secretary of State for Europe Stephen Doughty, Prime Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno.
Border checks
Under this agreement, routine border checks between Gibraltar and Spain will be abolished, and will also bring Gibraltar closer to the European Union through alignment with Schengen rules and customs procedures, and will greatly facilitate the movement of goods. And workers between Gibraltar and Spain, which strengthens economic ties between Gibraltar and the European Union.
The status of Gibraltar has been a subject of discussion between the European Union and Britain since the latter’s exit from the European Union in 2020, and negotiations were concluded in June 2025 after reaching a broad agreement that included the four parties: the European Union, Britain, Spain, and Gibraltar.
According to the procedures followed, the agreement will be presented to The European Parliament is set to approve it this winter, while the Council of the European Union has authorized its provisional application as of July 15, 2026.
