Upgrading and refurbishing 100 aircraft within 44 months

Emirates Airlines announced a historic achievement by modernizing and refurbishing 100 aircraft as part of its huge fleet modernization program, which is the largest known program implemented by any airline in the world, within 44 months.

The carrier stated that since the start of work on the program, in November 2022, Emirates has been able to complete comprehensive modernization operations for 47 Airbus A380 aircraft and 53 Boeing 777 aircraft in the hangars of the Emirates Airline Engineering Center in Dubai, while about 20 additional aircraft are scheduled to be modernized by the end of December 2026, which means the completion of more than half of the program for which the carrier has allocated investments worth five billion dollars (about 18.36 million dollars). Clark added: “Implementing a project of this size and complexity internally in Dubai required careful planning processes, high craftsmanship skills and unparalleled technical capabilities. Our team succeeded in reformulating the concepts of modernizing the two largest passenger aircraft models in the commercial aviation sector, to ensure that each aircraft returns to the air on time in excellent condition.”

According to Emirates Airlines, over a period of 44 months, a team from the Emirates Engineering Centre, which includes more than 400 engineers and technicians, worked a total of 4.4 million hours of work to modernize 100 aircraft, including conducting advanced modernization and upgrades to the aircraft cabins and equipping them with a new premium economy class cabin. More than 3,800 new seats were installed in the premium economy class cabins in the updated aircraft.

Since the start of the project implementation in November 2022, the Emirates Engineering Center team has modernized an average of 28 aircraft annually, and the modernization operations required complex engineering and technical operations, including completely dismantling the internal parts of the aircraft, implementing a comprehensive renovation of all cabins in them, using more than 4,000 parts for the A380, and more than 2,500 parts for the Boeing 777, and reassembling all internal parts and components with great precision.

The center’s team also developed innovative solutions to manage a project of this magnitude, and cooperated with more than 100 suppliers within the framework of this ambitious project.
