New Zealand warns of the risk of a tsunami after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake

New Zealand authorities issued a tsunami warning on Thursday after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the west coast of the South Island, calling on residents there to “move immediately” to higher areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency said that residents of the affected areas should go to “the nearest high area, outside the tsunami evacuation areas, or to the furthest possible point inland.”
