The UAE strengthens its international presence in artificial intelligence governance during an international conference in Lisbon
ABU DHABI, 16 JULY / WAM / The UAE has strengthened its active presence in international discussions on the governance of artificial intelligence, through the participation of Engineer Mohammed Salem, the country’s alternative representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with specialized scientific research within the work of the annual conference of the Academic Council of the United Nations System “ACUNS”, which was hosted by Nova University in Lisbon, Portugal, this July.
The research presented by Engineer Mohamed Salem focuses on studying how artificial intelligence can reshape global governance, including a proposed framework that allows international organizations to make optimal use of advanced technical expertise, while ensuring that sovereign decision-making authority remains in the hands of states.
The submission of this research coincided with the issuance of the first report of the United Nations Independent International Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence, which was followed by the holding of the first global dialogue on the governance of artificial intelligence in Geneva, at a time when the world is witnessing a growing interest in developing frameworks for this governance and enhancing multilateral cooperation in this vital field.
The conclusions reached by the research are consistent with the approach that the United Nations is currently working to establish at the institutional level, as well as with the methodology used in the field of international civil aviation for decades, which coincides with the great interest that the UAE attaches to supporting international dialogue on future technologies, and the continued contribution to developing governance frameworks that establish the responsible use of artificial intelligence and support paths of multilateral cooperation.
