The White House responds: Will Infantino move from FIFA to head the United Nations?

The White House commented on reports that US President Donald Trump discussed with FIFA President Gianni Infantino the possibility of him running for the position of next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said that she did not know whether this topic was raised during Trump and Infantino’s meetings, adding: “I do not know if they discussed it.”

Levitt noted that Trump and Infantino communicate frequently, stressing that the US President has respect for the President of FIFA.

The New York Post reported earlier that Trump intends to support Infantino’s nomination to succeed the current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.

According to established procedures, any candidate for the position must obtain the support of 9 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council, provided that none of the five permanent members use the right of veto, before the nomination is officially approved by the UN General Assembly.

The term of current Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026.
