"Dubai Electricity": The intelligent control system for gas turbines increases the capacity of power stations by about 29 megawatts

Dubai, July 27 / WAM / Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced the achievement of advanced operational results for the world’s first intelligent system for autonomous control of gas turbines based on artificial intelligence, which it developed in cooperation with Siemens Energy.
The system contributed to improving the operating efficiency of gas turbines and increasing the production capacity of fourteen gas turbines in the Jebel Ali power production and water desalination complex by about 28.9 megawatts, saving about 38.95 million dirhams in capital expenditures.
The smart controller for gas turbines is an advanced solution that integrates digital twinning and thermodynamics with artificial intelligence algorithms, to achieve automatic and immediate control over the operation of gas turbines, which contributes to restoring lost production capacity as a result of obsolescence, increasing production capacity, enhancing the stability of the combustion process, and reducing emissions.
The project achieved tangible savings in fuel consumption, resulting in savings in operational expenses estimated at approximately 8.72 million dirhams, and contributed to reducing approximately 28,530 tons of carbon emissions annually, in addition to reducing approximately 22.9 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions annually.
The project received a 7-star rating in the “Global Best Practices Competition”, as the best practice in the world in employing artificial intelligence and advanced technologies to raise the efficiency of energy production plants and achieve sustainable operational and environmental value.
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said that with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, “may God protect him,” the Authority continues to enhance the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, most notably artificial intelligence, to develop the energy and water infrastructure and support its quest to be the first global service institution based entirely on artificial intelligence, stressing the Authority’s keenness to transform innovation into sustainable operational value that enhances the efficiency and reliability of the electricity and water system in Dubai.
He added that this project embodies the ability of the Authority’s cadres to develop pioneering solutions that improve operational performance and consolidate the Authority’s global position in innovation and sustainability, pointing out that this achievement is added to the Authority’s long track record in the field of innovation, as it contributes to enhancing operational performance, achieving savings in fuel and costs, and reducing emissions, which supports the Authority’s efforts to enhance sustainability and reduce the environmental footprint of energy production operations.
For his part, Engineer Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of the Production Sector (Energy and Water) at DEWA, explained that the system combines artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twinning and thermodynamics, which allows monitoring the performance of turbines and improving their operation in an intelligent and immediate way. It also supports making more accurate and rapid operational decisions, and increases the efficiency of managing vital assets in energy production plants.
The project’s 7-star rating confirms DEWA’s ability to develop innovative operational solutions that combine efficiency, sustainability and reliability, and to provide leading global models that contribute to consolidating Dubai’s position as a global center for innovation and sustainability.
