The United Nations calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Syria

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in northwestern Syria, expressing his deep alarm at the recent escalation of violence in this region.

In a statement by his official spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General reminded all parties concerned of their obligations under international law, including humanitarian law, and called on them to immediately return to the political process facilitated by the United Nations in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).

He pointed to the reports received indicating civilian casualties, the displacement of tens of thousands of people, damage to civilian infrastructure, and the interruption of basic services and humanitarian aid.

He stressed the need for all parties to adhere to the protection of civilians and civilian objects, including allowing the safe passage of civilians fleeing hostilities.

Guterres stressed the urgent need for all parties to deal seriously with the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to chart a comprehensive path out of the conflict in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).
