The UAE and Korea enhance cooperation in water resources management

ABU DHABI, 3rd December, 2017 (WAM) – The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea held the seventh meeting of the Joint Operating Committee for Cooperation in Water Resources Management, with the aim of exchanging the latest technologies and experiences in the field of water management and enhancing cooperation in related fields.
The meeting, which was held via videoconferencing technology, was chaired by His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, and His Excellency Sung Hwan Lee, Director General of the Water Use Policy Office at the Korean Ministry of Environment.
In this context, His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama said that water is an essential element for life, ecosystems and economies, as it is considered one of the major national priorities for many countries, due to its vital role in achieving food security, even though the UAE is considered one of the desert countries with limited resources of natural fresh water. However, it has achieved remarkable progress in managing water resources and sustainability in the sector, thanks to the development of the Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to ensure sustainable and continuous access to sufficient and safe quantities of water.
He added that cooperation between the UAE and the Republic of Korea in the field of water resources management is a successful model for achieving global climate goals and facing future challenges in water and sustainable energy, by accelerating the development of innovative technologies in the field, exchanging knowledge, building capabilities, and benefiting from global best practices. .
For his part, His Excellency Song Hwan Lee said that the Republic of Korea and the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding in 2015 to enhance cooperation in the water sector, and since then, the two countries have held six meetings of the Joint Operating Committee for cooperation in water resources management to discuss and implement joint initiatives in this sector.
He expressed his aspiration this year to holding fruitful discussions during the seventh meeting, and his great confidence that this meeting will constitute an opportunity to discuss various areas, expressing his hope that Korean water management techniques will be effective and applicable.
The meeting included presentations by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure on future initiatives, including a pilot project for managing smart water networks to reduce untapped water, in addition to managing surface water, torrents, and dams in the Emirates.
The Korean experts also reviewed advanced technologies, including floating solar panel projects, in addition to the policies and technologies of the early warning system for urban floods in the Republic of Korea.
