The World Desalination Conference kicks off in Abu Dhabi the day after tomorrow

ABU DHABI, 6 December 2020 – The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi organized a media conference to reveal the details of the World Desalination Conference 2024, whose activities will be held from 8 to 12 December, at the ADNEC Abu Dhabi Center, under the slogan “Addressing Water Scarcity.”
Participating in the media conference, which was held yesterday, were His Excellency Dr. Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi, Acting Director General of Regulatory Affairs at the Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi, Khalifa Al Qubaisi, Chief Commercial Officer of ADNEC Group, and Shannon McCarthy, Executive Director and Secretary General of the International Desalination Association.
The conference is one of the largest events that brings together water sector leaders, experts and innovators to discuss one of the most important challenges facing the world today, which is ensuring fair and equal access to water for all individuals and communities, and enhancing the ability of water systems to adapt to crises.
More than 200 speakers from more than 40 countries participate in the conference, and during it, in more than 100 dialogue sessions, panels, and workshops, experts discuss the latest innovations in the fields of water desalination, reuse, and sustainable management of water resources.
Dr. Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi stressed the need for immediate action to address the water scarcity crisis, noting that this crisis requires innovation and joint international cooperation, stressing Abu Dhabi’s commitment to providing innovative solutions to this urgent problem, and its endeavor to create a breakthrough in water management, with the aim of leading global efforts to achieve sustainability in This vital sector.
He pointed out the importance of holding the World Desalination Conference, which Abu Dhabi will host next week, to discuss advanced solutions that contribute to ensuring safe, fair and sustainable water supplies.
For his part, Khalifa Al Qubaisi said that the conference, which returns to Abu Dhabi again, emphasizes the emirate’s pioneering role in finding sustainable water solutions and innovation in the field of energy and water, and that such global events strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a center for global cooperation.
The conference was considered an important opportunity for all concerned parties at the local and international levels to exchange visions and experiences and explore innovative solutions to address one of the most important global issues.
In turn, Shannon McCarthy, Executive Director and Secretary General of the International Desalination Association, said that climate change is exacerbating global crises such as water scarcity and floods, and that innovative solutions represented by water desalination and reuse are extremely important to address this urgent global problem.
She added that the World Desalination Conference 2024, hosted by Abu Dhabi, brings together international and local experts in the fields of water desalination, reuse, and renewable energy, to find practical solutions to this crisis. It also highlights the emirate’s firm commitment to enhancing water sustainability, encouraging innovation in this field, and pushing the wheel of water. Progress towards global water systems capable of adapting to crises.
The conference will include various activities focusing on aspects related to water scarcity, water resilience and water security, in addition to the “XPRIZE Reducing Water Scarcity” team summit, sponsored by the Mohammed bin Zayed Water Initiative, which is a global competition worth 119 million US dollars, lasting 5 years and designed to confront Challenge water scarcity by encouraging innovation in sustainable and affordable desalination technologies.

A Leaders’ Summit will also be held, which will focus on vital topics such as the water-energy-food nexus, green finance, and corporate leadership in water security.
As part of the conference activities, the department will organize a special program for youth that includes more than 10 specialized sessions related to the Abu Dhabi Water Cruise, youth innovations, sustainable entrepreneurship, and a review of the experiences of former sector leaders.
