With cautious hope, Pedersen looks forward to opening a chapter of peace, reconciliation, dignity and inclusion for all Syrians

As the country witnesses “a watershed moment” In its history, Mr. Pedersen once again expressed his deepest solidarity with all those who have endured “The brunt of death, destruction, detention and countless human rights violations.”
The Special Envoy’s statement came after reports of the fall of the capital, Damascus, at dawn today into the hands of the Syrian opposition – after it had invaded large areas of the country within days – and news reports of President Bashar al-Assad abandoning his duties and leaving the country.
The UN envoy stressed that this moment renews the aspiration of the displaced to return to their lost homes, and represents the beginning of the reunion of families separated by the war. And he said: “For those unjustly detained, and the families of detainees and missing persons, opening the prison doors reminds us of how justice can ultimately be served.”

He said that many Syrians, including armed groups and civil society, had expressed to him and in public statements their desire to protect their fellow Syrians and state institutions in the future against retaliation and harm. In this context, he made an appeal “Clear and unambiguous” To all armed parties on the ground “To maintain good conduct, law and order, protect civilians and maintain public institutions.”
Mr. Pedersen urged all Syrians to prioritize dialogue, unity and respect for international humanitarian law and human rights as they seek to rebuild their society. He stressed the need for there to be a collective effort to ensure peace and dignity for all, reiterating his readiness to support the Syrian people “On its journey towards a stable future that includes everyone and is decided and shaped by the Syrian people.”
“Let us honor the memory of those who have suffered for decades by committing to help Syrians build a Syria where justice, freedom and prosperity are shared realities,” he said. “Let us stand in solidarity with Syrians to help them ensure that this new chapter is one of hope and opportunity for every Syrian.”
