40 missing after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Greece

One person drowned after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Crete in southern Greece, and about forty people were missing, the Greek Coast Guard announced today.
A massive search operation was launched in an effort to find the missing persons following the incident that occurred shortly after midnight, in which 39 people were found.
Other ships are heading to the site to participate in the search operations, which are being carried out with the support of an Italian frigate and a helicopter.

Migrant incidents

Similar incidents have occurred in recent weeks, the last of which dates back to early November, when four people died near the island of Rhodes.
In late October, two people died near the island of Samos and a few days ago, four people, including two children, died near the island of Kos.
This year, Greece witnessed a 25% increase in the number of people fleeing war and poverty, reaching 30% in Rhodes and in the southeastern Aegean Sea, according to the Greek Ministry of Immigration.
