A former informant admits to fabricating bribery charges against Biden and his son.. What is the story?

A former FBI informant has pleaded guilty to fabricating allegations about US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter accepting bribery.
Alexander Smirnov pleaded guilty to a felony related to the fabricated story, along with a tax evasion charge stemming from a separate indictment accusing him of concealing millions of dollars in income.
Smirnov’s attorney declined to comment after the hearing in Los Angeles federal court.

Recommending imprisonment

Prosecutors and defense agreed to recommend a prison sentence of between 5 and 6 years when he is sentenced next month.

Smirnov’s sentence will be deducted from the time he has served since his arrest last February on charges of telling his FBI handler that executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid President Biden and his son Hunter $5 million each in 2015.

Biased expression about Biden

Prosecutors said Smirnoff had been an informant for more than a decade when he made the resounding allegations about Biden in June 2020, after “prejudiced expressions” about Joe Biden as a presidential candidate.
But Smirnov had only routine business dealings with Burisma starting in 2017, court documents said.
