Britain: Rain and snow cause the cancellation of some New Year’s Eve celebrations
Rain of varying intensity in the United Kingdom
The agency said that almost every part of the UK was subject to at least one of several weather warnings issued by the Met Office between Monday and Wednesday.
On New Year’s Eve, an amber rain warning was issued for the Scottish Highlands and Moray until 5pm, and a yellow warning for snow and rain covers most of Scotland until midnight, which could lead to major disruption to preparations for New Year’s celebrations.
Transportation delay on New Year’s Eve
Meteorologists said delays to all types of transport were likely during New Year’s Eve, with strong winds continuing to reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour (113 kilometers per hour) in parts of England and Northern Ireland. Parts of central and southern Scotland and northern England are covered by a yellow wind warning from 7am to 11pm, with a separate wind warning covering Northern Ireland from 6am to 2pm.
A 24-hour yellow warning for rainfall will come into effect for most parts of Wales and northwest England from 6pm on Tuesday.
Traditional outdoor Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, have already been cancelled, as have public fireworks displays scheduled in Blackpool, Newcastle, the Isle of Wight and Ripon, North Yorkshire.
The City Council in London said it would continue to “closely monitor the weather forecast.”
