Hunger worsens
Now, nearly three months after the outbreak of the conflict, “the pessimistic scenario is starting to come true,” said the Director of the Food and Nutrition Analysis Department at the World Food Programme, Jan-Martin Bauer.
He added: “The closure of the Strait of Hormuz leads to an exacerbation of hunger,” pointing to the sharp rise in the prices of basic foodstuffs such as rice and wheat.
He continued: “Unfortunately, expectations have begun to worsen.” The pessimistic statements issued earlier this year are coming true, and we must act immediately.”
According to the World Food Programme’s analysis, “the crisis is creating serious repercussions, particularly through fuel and food price and income crises, as well as trade disruptions.”
Power added: “As these factors interact with existing vulnerabilities, they will quickly turn into tangible impacts on food security and livelihoods.”
