The official funeral ceremony for former US President Carter begins on January 4 and continues until January 9

In an exceptional memorial ceremony, the official funeral activities for former US President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, begin on January 4, 2025, and continue until January 9, 2025, as the nation witnesses a moving farewell to this historic leader who passed away on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100 years old, in his hometown of Plains, Georgia

The ceremony will begin on Saturday, January 4, in Americus, Georgia, where the president’s body will be transported from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in a procession that passes through his hometown of Plains, stopping briefly at his family farm. The National Parks Authority will honor the late president by ringing the historic bell of the farm 39 times.

The funeral procession will then head to Atlanta, where it will stop at the Georgia State Capitol, where Governor Brian Kemp and other officials will observe a minute of silence in honor of his memory. Then the body will arrive at the Carter Presidential Center, where a private ceremony will be held, followed by a public reception for crowds of mourners

The body continues to be placed in a public hall for the public to pay their respects on Sunday and Monday, as the public is invited to participate during that period

On January 7, the body of former President Carter will travel to Washington, D.C., on a private plane belonging to “Air Mission 39”. After its arrival, the body is transported in a solemn procession to the Capitol building, where it rests in the Great Hall amid an honorary military guard, so that members of the US Congress can offer their condolences during a memorial ceremony held at 3 p.m..

On January 8, the national funeral ceremony will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington in the presence of dignitaries and officials, marking a historic moment that celebrates the legacy of the president who dedicated his life to serving humanity.

On Thursday, January 9, the president’s body will return to the state of Georgia, where a special ceremony will be held at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. Then, the procession moves to Carter’s house to hold a private burial ceremony in the presence of the family.

These ceremonies will include a distinctive salute from the US Navy with an aircraft formation known as the “Missing Man’s Formation”, in honor of his service in the US Navy and his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
