Ukraine stops the flow of Russian gas to Europe

KIEV, 1st JANUARY / WAM / Ukraine announced that it had stopped transporting Russian natural gas to Europe via its territory, today, Wednesday, after the end of the five-year transit agreement.
According to the Ukrainian news agency “Ukrinform”, Kiev informed its international partners of this move, which it considered to be in the interest of national security.
In a statement, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Haloshenko described stopping the transit of Russian gas as a historic event, noting that the infrastructure had been prepared in advance to operate under zero transit conditions while ensuring reliable gas supplies to Ukrainian consumers.
The European Commission had previously confirmed its readiness to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory as of January 1, 2025, according to “Ucrinform.”
