Renewable energy production in Belgium declines for the first time since 2016

BRUSSELS, January 2, 2016 – Belgium, for the first time since 2016, will produce less renewable energy in 2024 than the previous year.

Statistics from the European Networks for Energy Networks said that total electricity production fell to its lowest level in 6 years in the country, driven by a decline in nuclear production and the minimum operation of gas-fired power plants, from 81 terawatt hours consumed in 2024, of which 88% of production. Domestic, down from 98% in 2023, while the remaining 12% was imported.

Nuclear energy, which remains Belgium’s largest source of electricity, accounted for 42% of production in 2024, and continued to decline year-on-year, while the share of wind energy decreased by 11% compared to 2023, due to heavy rainfall and low wind conditions, while it reached Solar energy to record level; It contributed 12% of production.

Production of gas-fired power plants was at its lowest levels in a decade, as importing electricity from France and the Netherlands proved more cost-effective.
