Despite the conflict, Slovakia intends to supply Ukraine with electricity

Slovakia’s state-owned electricity grid operator, SEPS, has announced that it will continue to supply electricity to Ukraine.
This comes despite the existence of a dispute between the two countries against the backdrop of Ukraine’s decision to stop Russian gas supplies through a pipeline passing through its territory.

SEBS informed that it will adhere to the contracts it concluded with the Ukrainian company Ukrainergo.
The Ukraine-provided SEPS is used to compensate for power outages resulting from Russian attacks on the Ukrainian power grid.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had previously threatened Ukraine with retaliation if it did not continue to supply Russian gas to Slovakia and other countries in the European Union.

“After January 1, we will evaluate the situation and available options for taking reciprocal measures against Ukraine,” Fico said in a statement issued in Bratislava.
He continued: “If this is unavoidable, we will stop electricity supplies… or agree on another approach.”
Ukraine had stopped Russian gas flows in a move that had been announced a long time ago, when a transit agreement expired at the end of last year.

Russian gas supply

Slovakia relies heavily on Russian gas supplies and has no access to the sea.
Also, building a liquefied natural gas terminal on the Danube River in Bratislava will take years.
