Trudeau announces his resignation as head of the Canadian government and the ruling party

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday his resignation from the position he has held for 10 years, explaining that he will continue to perform his duties until his party chooses a successor.

Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa, “I intend to resign from my position as head of the party and government, as soon as the party chooses its next president.”

The move came after Trudeau faced a lot of pressure in recent weeks, with the legislative elections approaching and his party falling to its lowest levels in the opinion polls.
