Manchester City’s spark ignites the English Premier League against Arsenal

While Spaniard Pep Guardiola was celebrating with his players Manchester City’s crowning of the English Football League Cup title on Sunday at the expense of Arsenal, at the same time he faced a pressing question.
At Wembley Stadium, City won 2-0 and achieved a morale boost against one of their most prominent rivals for the English Premier League title.
But will Guardiola’s fifth League Cup title be a spark that ignites Arsenal’s chase in the league race?
The Catalan coach, who has not achieved any victory over his former assistant Mikel Arteta since 2023, knows that beating Arsenal in one match is a difficult task in itself.
Finding a way to surpass the league leaders, nine points ahead of second-placed City, is a more complex task.
“I would have loved for us to be the ones ahead of Arsenal by nine points,” Guardiola said.
He added, “I told the players today we will see our true level. They are the best so far, there is no doubt about that, so let us prove ourselves, and in the second half I did not believe that we were able to do that against Arsenal.”
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich German coach continued: “But this victory will not have an impact on the title race. It is a different tournament.”
City has a game in hand compared to Arsenal, and will host the Gunners at Etihad Stadium in April.
However, Guardiola acknowledged that winning the two matches would not be enough unless Arsenal faltered in other matches.
He said, “They will be more in control when they visit Al-Ittihad. Maybe this match will help us, but the league is still in their hands,” adding: “Will this team lose points? We will try to win our matches and then see what happens.”
After disappointing draws in the league against lowly West Ham and Nottingham Forest, in addition to a lackluster exit from the Champions League quarter-finals against Spanish Real Madrid, City was in dire need of a title that would restore the positive atmosphere to the club.
A spark inside
Guardiola believes that this coronation may be the beginning of a new phase for a club that has won 19 titles in various competitions since his arrival 10 years ago.
He said about his team, which has undergone a costly renewal process in the last 18 months: “When you start winning and the generation is young, you can continue. I need to know how they act in certain moments.”
“I feel like something can blossom. Winning helps speed up the process,” he added.
The Spaniard added, “We are much better compared to last season, but we are still not the team we should be. This needs time. I hope we will reach it by the end of next season.”
Arsenal entered the final as an extraordinary candidate, seeking to seize its first title in six years.
But he left Wembley while still waiting for the second coronation during the Arteta era, amid a torrent of questions about the coach’s choices and tactics, and the return of talk again about the dilemma of “falling in decisive moments.”
After three seasons that ended as runner-up in the league, Arsenal does not have the luxury of allowing the Wembley defeat to confuse its path in a season in which it is competing for a historic treble.
Arteta’s decision to include Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga instead of the main goalkeeper, his compatriot David Raya, backfired, after Kepa made a mistake in dealing with Frenchman Rayan Chergui’s cross, paving the way for Nico O’Reilly to score the first goal.
Arteta’s conservative style was also criticized, but the Spanish coach pledged that his team would turn the pain into fuel that would push it towards winning the league title for the first time since 2004.
Arteta, whose team is competing in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the quarter-finals of the Federation Cup, said, “We have to put things in context. We will turn this frustration and this spark inside into the best two months we can live together.”
He added, “This is our role, and we will manage this energy well. Now we have to overcome this pain and disappointment. The good thing is that we have recent experience in how to respond after such moments, and I am confident that we will do that again.”
