Trump calls for Canada to be annexed to the United States… and reveals the advantages

US President-elect Donald Trump, shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, called for Canada to annex US territory.
“If Canada merges with the United States, there will be no tariffs,” Trump said in a social media post.
Trump continued: “Taxes will decrease significantly, and Canada will be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround it.”

Trump’s threats to Canada

Trump had threatened to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on Canadian and Mexican goods as soon as he assumed the presidency.
The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner and the destination of 75 percent of its exports, and about two million Canadians out of a total population of 41 million depend on it.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from the position he has held for ten years, explaining that he will continue to conduct business until his party chooses a successor.

Justin Trudeau resignation

This step came after Trudeau faced a lot of pressure in recent weeks, with the approaching legislative elections and the decline of his party’s popularity to its lowest levels in opinion polls.
He also announced at the same time the suspension of Parliament until March, to conduct business, to give his party time to choose a replacement for him.
He added, visibly affected, “This country deserves a real choice in the upcoming elections. It has become clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be prime minister.”
He is expected to be at the head of the government on January 20, during the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States.

Legislative elections in Canada

Trudeau’s announcement comes as legislative elections are set to be held no later than October 2025.
Laurie Turnbull, a professor at Dalhousie University, confirmed to AFP that the current political context is “unusual,” and that many figures are moving behind the scenes to assume leadership of the party during the Christmas and New Year season.
A source within the Liberal Party told AFP that former Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney (59 years old), who has been the party’s economic advisor since last summer, has intensified his movements in recent days to assess the level of support he enjoys within the party.
