The coldest night in Scotland

Several schools in northeastern Scotland were forced to close their doors after the country was exposed, throughout the night before last, to a wave of snow and ice, according to what the British news agency “PA Media” reported yesterday. More than 80 schools and nurseries were closed across the Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland regions, due to snowfall and poor driving conditions, on what was supposed to be the first day for students to return to school after the holidays.

The news comes after the country witnessed the coldest night of the winter so far, at Loch Glascarnoch, located between Ullapool and Inverness, where the temperature reached minus 13.3 degrees Celsius, according to Met Office data.

The Met Office’s yellow warning, to be careful of snow and ice, remained in force across the north-east and east of the country, as far south as Edinburgh, until midday yesterday.
