Heavy snowfall…a severe storm disrupts life in eastern America

A severe storm will hit the eastern United States on Monday, bringing heavy snowfall, affecting millions of Americans.

The storm, which is heading from the center of the country to the coastal states of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, has caused flight cancellations, school closures, and traffic accidents.
More than 50 million people were affected, and more than 300,000 were deprived of electricity, according to the Power Outage website.

Snow covers the streets of Washington

In Washington, snow covered the streets, and the National Weather Service said in its latest bulletins that it expected snow up to 30 centimeters to fall in some places.

Nearby, the two main airports in the capital, Dulles and Ronald Reagan, have canceled more than 500 flights since six in the morning (11:00 GMT), and more than 2,000 flights have been postponed across the country, according to the “Flight Aware” website.

Possible hurricanes

The National Weather Service warned of the amount of snow expected, especially in Ohio and the Appalachian Mountains, where any movement on snowy and icy roads could be “dangerous.”

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said: “The snow has turned to ice, causing power outages and making the roads more dangerous. Transportation safety teams are working in full swing to open the roads and allow public utility crews and emergency responders to move.”
He called on residents not to leave their homes.

A state of emergency in some states

The governors of Missouri, Virginia, and Maryland declared states of emergency, similar to Kentucky.

Video clips published by The Weather Channel, which specializes in weather conditions, showed vehicles sliding on icy roads, and tractor trailers colliding with road barriers in Kansas.

According to the country’s meteorological service, thunderstorms accompanied by hail and tornadoes may hit the southeastern states.
It warned that strong winds could cause property damage and “prolonged power outages.”

18 degrees Celsius below zero

In the center and east of the country, the temperature is expected to drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius in some areas, with violent winds blowing.

Scientists confirm that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and dangerous as a result of climate change caused by human activity.
