A 5.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Bushehr Province, southern Iran

Koresh Dehghan, Director General of Crises in Bushehr Province, southern Iran, said that an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the city of Rez in Jam Province, south of the province.

Dehghan added in a statement to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) yesterday evening, that this earthquake was recorded at a depth of 20 kilometers from the ground.

Dehghan did not provide further details.

Iran is exposed to frequent earthquakes as a result of their occurrence in a collision zone between plates located directly under the Earth’s crust. The deadliest of these was an earthquake measuring 7.7 degrees, which occurred in the northwest of the country in 1990, leaving 37,000 dead and 100,000 injured.
