Abu Dhabi, January 9 / WAM / The medical team at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City succeeded in treating a newborn child suffering from a congenital heart defect, by performing a series of difficult and complex operations.
The child, Awad, was born with a difficult heart condition, and underwent many medical interventions during the first weeks of his life. A team of cardiologists and surgeons led by Dr. Benedict Rajkumar, a pediatric heart surgeon at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, performed several surgeries on him.
The child, Awad, was discharged from the hospital on June 19, but he suffered complications and was readmitted to the hospital due to hyposaturation, a condition in which oxygen levels in the blood drop to very low levels, which required more medical care and close monitoring.
The medical team immediately implemented a comprehensive care plan, which included monitoring the child’s condition and weight in the pediatric cardiology clinic. Where he fully recovered.
Dr. Benedict Rajkumar said that heart defects are the most common type of birth defects, affecting about 1% of births, and that one out of every four birth defects is serious and requires surgery in the first year of life.
