"Abu Dhabi Culture and Tourism" Launch a contest "House of craftsmen" For design

ABU DHABI, 9th January, 2018 (WAM) – The “Craftsmen’s House” of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi announced that it has opened the door for participation to all designers residing in the country, in addition to creative studios and students in creative majors, to participate in the “Craftsmen’s House” design competition, explaining that registration will continue until… Next February 9.

This competition celebrates craftsmen and the rich heritage of traditional Emirati handicrafts, by harnessing them innovatively in contemporary designs. The Mubadala Foundation is sponsoring the competition in its first edition, which underscores the shared commitment to supporting local talent and providing a platform for emerging designers and artists in the UAE to showcase… Their own creativity.

All participants will work hand in hand with artisans and handicraft professionals to create designs that combine the past and the present, by highlighting handicrafts in contemporary designs.

Those wishing to participate can participate in three main categories: artistic installations, furniture design, and product design. Participants in the artistic installations category can submit paintings, sculptures, or any other installation artwork that embodies the essence of traditional handicrafts in a contemporary context.

As for the Furniture Design category, entries can include original furniture designs that reflect a blend of traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics such as chairs, tables, lighting lamps and much more.

In the Product Design category, entries can include unique designs, under the title “Everyday Household Items,” and include ceramic ware, tableware and accessories; 20 candidates will be selected from the list of participants to enter a specially prepared program to develop their designs, and eight winners will be selected.

Entries will be evaluated by a committee of experts in the fields of art, design, traditional crafts and education, along with key members from the “House of Craftsmen” and the “Mubadala Foundation”, within a judging process without revealing the identity of the participant in order to maintain objectivity and integrity.

Entries are judged based on selection criteria, including creativity, craftsmanship, innovation, relevance to the topic at hand, and overall artistic and design merit, in order to select the winners for each category.

It is noteworthy that the “House of Craftsmen” design competition is open to all distinguished artists, designers, and students of art and design in higher education institutions based in the United Arab Emirates, while all participants must be residents of the country.
