المملكة: 1,800 smart vehicles will support sustainable transportation in Mecca by 2025

Today, at the 2025 Hajj Conference and Exhibition, His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Region, inaugurated the “Mecca Taxi” service, one of the products of the General Center for Transport affiliated with the Royal Commission for the City of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the Holy Sites.

The Minister of Transport, Engineer Saleh Al-Jasser, handed over the license to operate the service to Engineer Saleh bin Ibrahim Al-Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission for the City of Mecca, on the services launch platform at the conference, which represents a new beginning towards developing the transportation sector in Mecca.
Engineer Saleh Al-Rasheed confirmed that all “Mecca Taxi” vehicles adopt hybrid and electrical systems, which makes them environmentally friendly and in line with the vision of Mecca as a smart and sustainable city that combines spirituality and modern technologies. The service also aims to improve the experience of pilgrims, Umrah pilgrims and residents, by providing reliable and highly efficient transportation services.
Engineer Saleh Al-Rasheed confirmed that all “Mecca Taxi” vehicles adopt hybrid and electrical systems, which makes them environmentally friendly and in line with the vision of Mecca as a smart and sustainable city that combines spirituality and modern technologies. The service also aims to improve the experience of pilgrims, Umrah pilgrims and residents, by providing reliable and highly efficient transportation services.
Interim operation of the service
The Royal Commission announced the start of the phased operation of the service starting today, January 13, 2025, with the service being provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as 47 strategic locations have been allocated, including the main stations and the vicinity of the Haram area, to ensure ease of access and meet users’ needs efficiently.
“Mecca Taxi” is distinguished by providing high-quality transportation services through a franchise contract with approved operators who own a fleet of cars that conform to approved standards. Safety means include surveillance cameras, sensors to measure the number of passengers, emergency buttons, and a specialized call center, in addition to electronic meters to determine the tariff set by the General Transport Authority.
The Royal Commission expects the number of vehicles to reach about 1,800 vehicles by the end of 2025, to meet the growing demand and achieve a qualitative shift in sustainable transportation services in the Holy City of Mecca.
