With a “major” attack, Russia targets Ukrainian energy sites

Russia targeted the Ukrainian energy sector with dozens of missiles and drones, Kiev announced Wednesday, intensifying a bombing campaign that has been ongoing for months.
The attack comes a day after Kiev announced the largest air attack ever targeting Russian army factories and energy centers hundreds of kilometers away from the front line.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia used 43 cruise and ballistic missiles and 74 attack drones in the attack, which occurred during the night and apparently targeted sites specifically in western Ukraine.

Ukrainian energy sector

“Another major Russian attack,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media. “We are in the middle of winter and the goal for the Russians remains the same: our energy sector.”
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement that its forces carried out “high-precision” strikes targeting energy facilities that “support the work of Ukrainian military industries,” and confirmed that they hit all of their targets.
But the Ukrainian Air Force reported that 30 missiles and 47 drones had been shot down, while Zelensky indicated that the authorities had succeeded in maintaining “the functioning of our energy system.”
