Announcing promising results for treating diabetes using mesenchymal stem cells

The Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center announced the achievement of promising results in treating type 1 diabetes using mesenchymal stem cells derived from the umbilical cord.
The treatment witnessed remarkable success with a 20-year-old Emirati patient, as the results showed a noticeable improvement in blood sugar levels and diabetes-related antibodies after only one month of treatment, with expectations of continued improvement.
This innovative treatment was entirely developed in the laboratories of the Abu Dhabi Advanced Stem Cell Center and is based on the regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells that work to modify immune responses and repair tissues, which helps restore pancreatic function and reduce diabetes-related complications.
The treatment included determining the appropriate doses of stem cells and administering them through an intravenous injection session that lasted two hours under the supervision of a specialized medical team. The patient was monitored according to strict protocols to ensure the quality and safety of the treatment without recording any side effects during the treatment period.
Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Executive Director of Medical Affairs at the Center, said that this achievement reflects the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center’s commitment to developing innovative treatments for chronic diseases such as diabetes, and thanks to our laboratories that comply with good manufacturing standards (GMP), we seek to provide advanced medical solutions that contribute to improving the lives of patients.
The doctor pointed out that the treatment places Abu Dhabi at the forefront of medical innovation in the region, stressing the importance of continuing research to expand the scope of cellular therapies.
The center confirmed that the patient showed an improvement in diabetes indicators, including cumulative blood sugar levels, while reducing the need to use insulin. The medical team continues to monitor the patient’s condition to ensure continued progress and evaluate the long-term benefits of treatment.
For his part, Dr. Antonio Bencomo, Director General of the Research Center, said that the center has advanced capabilities and techniques to isolate and develop mesenchymal stem cells while adhering to the highest quality standards, noting that these technologies open new horizons for treating diabetes and other chronic diseases, which strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading center in medicine. Regenerative.
This treatment represents a major step towards enhancing diabetes care and reducing insulin dependence while opening the door to more innovations in the field of regenerative medicine. The Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center confirms its commitment to developing effective cell therapies that meet the needs of patients locally and globally.
