The European Commission proposes a new action plan to protect the health sector from cyber attacks

The European Commission presented a new action plan, aiming to enhance cybersecurity for hospitals and health care providers.
The Commission explained – in a press release, published on its official website, today, Thursday – that “the announcement of this The new plan came within the framework of the political guidelines of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a main priority during the first 100 days of the new mandate, and this initiative is an important step to protect the healthcare sector from cyber threats, The plan will also contribute, by strengthening the threat detection, preparedness and response capabilities of hospitals and healthcare providers, to creating a safer environment for patients and health professionals.”
She added that “ Digitization is capable of revolutionizing healthcare and enabling better services to be provided to patients through innovations such as electronic health records, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence-driven diagnostics. However, cyber attacks can delay medical procedures and worsen the condition of Gridlock in emergency rooms and disruption of vital services that, in severe cases, may have a direct impact on the lives of Europeans, noting that Member States reported 309 major cybersecurity incidents in the healthcare sector in 2023, and this number was greater than any other vital sector.”
She continued, “The action plan proposes, among other things, that the European Union Cybersecurity Agency (ENISA) establish a comprehensive European Cybersecurity Support Center.” For hospitals and healthcare providers and providing them with tailored guidance, tools, services and training, the plan builds on the broader EU framework for strengthening cybersecurity across critical infrastructure and represents the first sector-specific initiative to deploy the full range of cybersecurity measures in the EU.
