Trump is considering giving TikTok a 90-day deadline before implementing the ban
Trump added in an interview with the American network NBC published on Saturday: “I think this would certainly be an option that we are considering.”
He continued, saying: “The 90-day extension is something that is likely to happen, because it is appropriate. You know, it is appropriate. We must look at it carefully. It is a very big issue.”
He added: “If I decide to do that, I will probably announce it on Monday.”
TikTok ban
On Friday, the US Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal from TikTok to stop a law banning the short-video app in the United States unless it is sold by its parent Chinese company, ByteDance.
The popular platform, which has 170 million users in the United States, could now be removed from the country’s app stores on Sunday, the day before Trump returns to the presidency, although the next steps remain unclear.
The current US President, Joe Biden, signed the ban or sale law last April after it was approved in Congress based on reasons related to national security.
Lawmakers fear that the Chinese government will obtain huge amounts of personal data and use the platform for political influence.
The law gave the Chinese company ByteDance until January 19 to abandon its operations in the United States or face a comprehensive ban from the Google and Apple app stores.
