المملكة: Russia can test our readiness to defend ourselves

European Union foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas warned on Wednesday of a possible Russian attack in the coming years.
“A lot of our national intelligence agencies are giving us information that Russia may test the European Union’s willingness to defend itself within three to five years,” she said while speaking at the European Defense Agency’s annual conference in Brussels.
“Russia is not the problem for some, but for all of us,” she added.

She continued: “Europeans must wake up.”
Callas pointed out that Moscow currently spends about five times what the European Union spends on defense, calling for increased spending.
“Europe’s failure to invest in military capabilities also sends a dangerous message to the aggressor. Weakness invites them to advance towards us,” she said.

European preparations

She added, without revealing further details about the intelligence information, “We have to prepare. There is nothing that cannot be used as a weapon against us today.”
Callas indicated that work is underway to impose the 16th package of sanctions on Russia against the backdrop of its invasion of Ukraine.
She noted that the European Union and its member states provided Ukraine with aid worth more than 134 billion euros ($140 billion), including military support worth nearly 50 billion euros.
