The death toll from a landslide accident in Indonesia has risen to 19
Heavy rains in a mountainous area near the city of Pekalongan in Central Java state led to a landslide on Monday, causing bridges to collapse and burying cars and homes in mud.
Search teams recover bodies
National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Mahari said, “Joint search teams recovered two bodies on Wednesday morning. The toll so far has reached 19 dead.”
He explained that “the two bodies belong to two people who were on the list of missing persons in this tragic incident,” leaving seven people still missing.
The search and rescue agency said in a statement on Wednesday that 13 people were injured in the landslide accident.
Rescue team efforts
The teams are using heavy machinery to open roads to enable relief teams to arrive, and about 200 rescue personnel have been dispatched to participate in the efforts, according to local official Muhammad Yulian Akbar.
Indonesia usually experiences landslides during the rainy season between November and April, but some disasters caused by weather conditions outside this season have occurred in recent years.
