We will not allow NATO to control the Baltic Sea

A senior Russian official said that Moscow will resist any NATO steps to control the Baltic Sea.
Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said on Friday that the Western Alliance’s decision to increase patrols around the Baltic Sea represents further evidence of “NATO’s desire to turn the Baltic Sea into its own lake.”

He continued: “This will not happen for many reasons, and one of the main reasons, of course, is that the Russian Federation will not allow it.”
Russia’s position has become weaker in the Baltic Sea due to Finland and Sweden joining NATO.

The two neighboring NATO members said that they would enhance patrols through their air and naval forces.
The decision came in response to several incidents that witnessed damage to power and communications cables at the bottom of the sea, while Russia was suspected of being behind the sabotage.

Strengthening NATO’s presence in the Baltic Sea

The Swedish government announced that it would contribute three warships to NATO’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the Baltic Sea.
She indicated that this comes as part of an attempt to protect the underwater infrastructure from any acts of sabotage, while the Swedish army will also allocate an ASC 890 surveillance plane.

The Swedish Coast Guard will also contribute four ships to help monitor the Baltic region, with another seven ships on alert.
