Global air freight achieves record growth during 2024

Geneva, January 29 / WAM / The International Air Transport Federation “IATA” said today that the annual performance data of the 2024 global air freight market showed a record growth in demand, as the annual demand for air freight increased, according to the scale of a ton of shipping per kilometer by a percentage 11.3% compared to 2023, and by 12.2% for international operations, exceeding the records recorded in 2021.
The annual air freight capacity increased, according to the scale of the shipping ton per kilometer, by 7.4% compared to 2023 and 9.6% for international operations.
The public sector ended with strong performance during December 2024, as global demand increased by 6.1% compared to December 2023 and 7% for international operations, while the global capacity increased by 3.7% compared to December 2023, and 5.2% for international operations.
In this context, Willie Walsh, General Manager of “IATA”, said: In 2024, the airlines transferred unprecedented quantities of goods by air, most importantly, that it was a year of profitable growth, supported by the prosperity of e -commerce and restrictions imposed on marine shipping.
Walsh said: The economic factors indicate another good year for air charging.
“IATA” expects that the rate of air freight growth will slow to 5.8% in 2025, in line with historical performance.
With regard to regional performance, Asia and the Pacific, the highest annual growth rate in the demand for air freight was 14.5%, with the capacity increasing by 11.3%, while North America witnessed the lowest growth rate among the regions, as the demand increased by only 6.6%, and the capacity increased 3.4%.
The demand in Europe increased by 11.2%, with the capacity increasing by 7.8%.
The airlines in the Middle East recorded a growth in demand by 13%, while the capacity increased by 5.5%.
And Latin America grows 12.6% in demand, 7.9% in capacity, and Africa growth by 8.5% in demand, with the capacity increasing by 13.6%.
