Guterres calls for more now to help the people of Sudan get out of “this nightmare”

This came at the high -level humanitarian conference of the people of Sudan today, which was held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa – the headquarters of the African Union. Mr. Guterres praised the generosity of the Sudanese people in supporting the displaced internally alongside the refugees from the region, including those from Eritrea, Chad, South Sudan and even Ethiopia at certain moments. He told those present that their pledges today “It will be an expression of this support.”

The Secretary -General pointed out that the United Nations system will launch its two plans for Sudan – for the humanitarian response and refugees – for the year 2025, which require 6 billion dollars to support about 26 million people inside and outside the Sudanese borders. He said: “These two calls, which were coordinated by the United Nations, exceeded any calls we made for Sudan and the region, and represent the unprecedented dimensions of the needs we face.”

Mr. Guterres said that Sudan is in the grip of a crisis “Amazing size and brutal”, It is increasingly spread to the wider region, and requires sustainable and urgent attention from the African Union and the broader international community.

He stressed the need to protect civilians, including the humanitarian workers, as well as facilitate rapid, safe, unable and sustainable human access in all areas in need. He added that external support and weapons flow must stop, because this “It enables the continuation of massive civil destruction and bloodshed.”

The Secretary -General said that the Sudanese people want an immediate ceasefire and protect civilians, adding that his personal envoy, Ramtan Lamamra, is communicating with the warring parties about concrete ways to strengthen these two goals, including through the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration.

He said: “The blessed month of Ramadan is at the doors. In this blessed time for peace, mercy, giving and solidarity, I urge you all to use your tremendous influence for good. Support with generous humanitarian response and press for respect for international law, stop hostilities, life -saving aid, and permanent peace. What the people of Sudan need strongly. “
