The United Nations launches two humanitarian calls at 6 billion dollars to help millions of people inside and outside Sudan

About two years of conflict has caused a catastrophic protection crisis, 12 million people displaced inside Sudan and through the borders. The fighting continues to kill and injure civilians and destroy hospitals, markets and other infrastructure. Nearly two -thirds of the population needs emergency aid, and the country faces famine conditions. Refugees strongly need neighboring countries that are already suffering from pressure on local resources.
In a joint statement, the Undersecretary of the Secretary -General for Humanitarian Affairs and emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher said: “Sudan faces a human emergency with horrific dimensions. Famine is worse. The epidemic of sexual violence is rampant. Children are killed and wounded. The suffering is horrific. But our plan is a lifeline for millions of people. We need to stop the fight And to those who need help. “
In turn, Philipo Grande, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “A third of Sudan’s population has become displaced. The consequences of this horrific and absurd conflict extended beyond the borders of Sudan. The neighboring countries have shown a great solidarity by welcoming the refugees. But the resources of these countries are limited – the basics such as water, shelter and health services are rare – and Sudan needs support Urgent. The international community must intervene and help, not only to ensure the continuing emergency aid and life -saving protection without interruption, but also to end violence and restore peace in Sudan.
Response inside Sudan
The circumstances of famine were reported in at least five locations in Sudan, including the camps for the displaced in Darfur and the Nuba Mountains. The catastrophic starvation is expected to be aggravated by May with the start of the lean season. The crisis is expected to worsen with the continued fighting and the collapse of basic services in most parts of the country.
Sudan’s humanitarian response plan aims to reach approximately 21 million people at risk through life and protection saving aid. This is the highest number of people to be included in any United Nations coordinated plan this year and requires support of $ 4.2 billion.
Response in neighboring countries
Thousands continue to flee daily with the continued conflict, the majority of people reach a state of extreme weakness, with high levels of malnutrition and require emergency aid. So far, nearly 3.5 million people have sought safety in neighboring countries, which has already been depleted by services and scarce resources.
The United Nations stated that the regional response plan for refugees will give priority to providing life and protection savvy assistance, including emergency shelters, and the transition from border areas to safer places, psychological and social support, clean water, health care and education.
Humanitarian partners will need $ 1.8 billion to support 4.8 million people in the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan and Uganda. The plan also aims to help host countries to enhance national services and implement programs that would help in achieving stability.
The United Nations warned that without immediate financing, two -thirds of refugee children will be deprived of access to primary education, threatening an entire generation. About 4.8 million refugees and members of the host community will continue to face extreme food insecurity, while depriving at least 1.8 million people of food aid. The acute health systems may already collapse.
Last year’s achievements
During the past year, humanitarian organizations reached more than 15.6 million people across Sudan with a support of $ 1.8 billion. The aid provided included food support and livelihoods for more than 13 million people, in addition to water, sanitation, hygiene, health, nutrition and shelter assistance.
Humanitarian organizations operating in neighboring countries provided life -saving aid by delivering food to more than a million people, medical support for half a million people and protection services for more than 800 thousand people.
