The European Union continues to rely on liquefied Russian gas

Brussels, February 18 / WAM / A new report issued by the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis “IEFA”, an independent global research center on the LNG sector in the European Union, showed that the continent with relying on Russian LNG and its purchase, explaining that member states In the federation, it bought a highly cooling gas of approximately 7 billion euros throughout 2024.

The report said that the European Union’s largest dependence on renewable energy and demand reduction policies allowed the mass to reduce liquefied natural gas imports by 16% in 2024, but this decrease did not translate into decrease in imports from Russia, pointing out that the delivery operations from Russia have grown during the year 2024 , 18%, and that the total tunnels of the mass on Russian LNG have increased since the beginning of the war to more than 30 billion euros.

Anna Maria Galler McCarvich, the chief energy analyst in Europe, at the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, said that the main markets of Russian gas are France, Belgium and Spain, which represents 85% of its imports, with lower quantities flowing to the Netherlands and Greece; France spent an estimated 2.68 billion euros on Russian LNG in 2024, and Belgium and Spain bought 930 million euros and 1.84 billion euros, respectively.

The report indicated that in 2024, the United Kingdom reduced its liquefied natural gas imports by 47%, and was the first to move away from Russian liquefied gas.
