The Union of Water and Electricity enhances the sustainability of the agricultural sector and supports food and water security

Dubai, March 5 / WAM / Al -Ittihad and Electricity Company continues to support the efforts of the UAE in enhancing food and water security, by providing sustainable solutions to the agricultural sector that contributes to improving water efficiency, relieving pressure on ground resources and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural production.

This comes within the framework of the company’s support in coordination and cooperation with its strategic partners in the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment for the Water Security Strategy 2036 and the food security strategy 2051 and the energy and water demand management program 2050, as well as the 2071 centenary targets, and the national campaign “the UAE cultivation”.
In this context, desalinated water is highlighted as a sustainable and reliable crops, which contributes to achieving financial savings for farmers, and enhancing dependence on alternative water sources, maintaining the strategic ground resources of the state.
Based on its commitment to promoting sustainable practices, the company provided a reduced tariff structure, supporting farmers across three slices, starting from the lowest consumption rate to 600 thousand gallons per month with a tariff of only 1.5 fils per gallon, and more than 600 thousand gallons to 1.5 million gallons per month with fees of 2 fils per gallon, and more than 2.5 fils for gallons.
More than 1300 farms have benefited from this reduced tariff since its launch in January 2022, which reflects a positive response by the agricultural community in the northern Emirates.

He added that providing a reduced tariff structure for farmers, reflects our keenness to enable them to benefit from innovative solutions, achieve financial savings, and support the efforts of the state in achieving the goals of the water security strategy 2036, food security 2051, and the vision of the Emirates 2031, to achieve the centenary of the Emirates 2071 and the principles of fifty “, stressing the continuation of constructive and fruitful work with strategic partners to provide the best solutions that guarantee The sustainability of the water and agricultural sectors, which enhances their role in achieving sustainable development.
For his part, His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Salman Al -Hammadi, the assistant undersecretary for the diversity sector in the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said that our resources of groundwater are precious, and preserving them contribute to its role in preserving the environmental balance and enhancing the sustainability of the agricultural sector, explaining that providing desalinated water for the agricultural sector encourages more farmers to rely on it in irrigation and meet their agricultural needs, instead of groundwater.

He stressed that the step taken by the Etihad Water and Electricity Company is a positive step to support farmers and agricultural society, pointing out that raising awareness of the benefits of using desalinated water and urging more farmers to improve their water consumption practices, will play a major role in promoting sustainable local agricultural production.
