China imposes additional fees on Canadian agricultural and food products

Beijing, on March 8 / WAM / China announced today, Saturday, the imposition of additional customs duties on a number of Canadian agricultural and food products.
The Chinese Customs Course Committee stated in a statement that, as of March 20, 100% additional customs recognition will be imposed on canola oil, oil seed pies, and peas, while an additional tax will be imposed by 25% on water and pork products.
This decision comes in response to the customs duties imposed by Ottawa last year on electric cars, steel and aluminum products, which the Chinese Committee described as “a flagrant violation of the rules of the World Trade Organization” and “a protective act”.
A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said today, Saturday, that the investigation conducted by Beijing to combat discrimination concluded that the restrictions taken by Canada “disrupt the natural trade system and violate the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said that the imposition of these customs duties came to confront a “deliberate policy to increase production capacity” by China.
China is the second largest commercial partner in Canada after the United States.
