What are the most prominent features of the draft constitutional declaration in Syria?

Today, Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara approved the draft of the Syrian constitutional declaration, and the period of the transitional phase was determined by five years.

The most prominent thing is that “Islamic jurisprudence is the main source of legislation”, and that “freedom of belief is reserved, and the state respects all heavenly religions and ensures the freedom to carry out all its rituals, provided that this is not prejudiced by public order.”

Moreover, the constitutional declaration will include several remarkable texts, such as that the President of the Syrian Arab Republic will take over the mission of the Prime Minister in the country.

The document will focus mainly on the concept of transitional justice, and the need to apply it to ensure that criminals are held accountable, fairness of the victims, and the honor of martyrs according to a comprehensive legal framework.

The constitutional declaration will also give President Ahmed Al -Sharaah the authority to appoint the People’s Assembly, provided that the fair distribution of components and efficiency will be guaranteed.

For its part, the Syrian Constitutional Declaration Committee announced that it was decided to limit the executive authority in the hands of the President of the Republic to the transitional phase to ensure the speed of movement, and to face any events at that stage.

The committee added in a press conference that it was decided to separate the authorities between the authorities, and gave the president one exceptional authority, which is to declare a state of emergency.

The committee added that it was decided to leave the order to dismiss the president, his dismissal or reduce his powers to the People’s Assembly, noting the dissolution of the Constitutional Court, and to grant the President of the Republic the right to appoint a new constitutional court that exercises its duties in accordance with the previous law pending a new law.

Al -Shara said after receiving the draft constitutional declaration: “We hope that this will be a good opening for the Syrian people on the path of construction and development, and we hope that this is a new date for Syria that we replace ignorance of knowledge and torment with mercy.”
