Saudi Aramco launches the first experimental unit to extract the direct air of carbon dioxide in the Kingdom

Saudi Aramco, one of the integrated and global -leading companies in the field of energy and chemicals, launched the first experimental unit to extract the direct air of carbon dioxide in the Kingdom, has the ability to remove 12 tons of carbon dioxide annually from the atmosphere.
This experimental station, which was developed in cooperation with Siemens Energy, is an important step within the company’s efforts to expand the capabilities of the direct extraction test. Saudi Aramco plans to use this facility as a test platform for the next generation of carbon dioxide detention materials in the Kingdom’s diverse climate. You will also seek to achieve cost cuts that can help accelerate the application of carbon dioxide extraction techniques in the region. Saudi Aramco and Siemens Energy intend to continue working closely with the aim of expanding the scope of this technology, which may lay the foundations for carbon dioxide extraction facilities on a large scale in the future.
Commenting on this, the Supreme Vice President of Technical Coordination and Supervision in Saudi Aramco, Professor Ali Al -Mishari, said: “It is likely that the technologies that extract carbon dioxide from the air will directly play an important role in reducing the emissions of gases that cause global global warming in the future, especially in the sectors that are difficult to reduce. Direct extraction systems for carbon dioxide that can be applied inside and outside the Kingdom.
Such projects confirm the strong focus of Saudi Aramco on the extraction of carbon, which represents a basic pillar in the company’s strategy to achieve the zero neutrality of the greenhouse gas emissions in the 1st and 2 range with its business facilities that it owns and runs completely by 2050. The company explores carbon dioxide extraction options, whether at the emissions point or directly from the atmosphere, from the atmosphere, from During the circular carbon economy approach, and the application of innovative technology solutions.
The launch of the experimental unit for carbon extraction and storage in the aftermath of the announcement in December 2024 was signed by Saudi Aramco and its partners, “Lindy” and “SLB”, a shareholder agreement paving the way for the development of a carbon extraction center and its storage in Jubail. The first stage of the carbon extraction center and its storage will have the ability to extract nine million tons of carbon dioxide from three gas laboratories belonging to Saudi Aramco and other industrial sources.
